Single driveways 30 to 45 m², doubles 50 to 80 m²

A driveway is the largest piece of concrete most households ever buy, and the one the street sees. Across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie the work falls into three kinds: first driveways on new lots in places like Fletcher and Cameron Park, replacements on older streets where the original slab has cracked, sunk or simply become too narrow for two modern cars, and widenings that turn a single strip into somewhere to park a second vehicle or a boat.

Three finishes, one page

Plain concrete, $95 to $130 per m². Broom finished grey concrete is the workhorse. It grips in the wet, it is the finish both councils prefer on the crossing, and it is the right call wherever function matters more than the look.

Coloured concrete, $115 to $160 per m². Oxide is mixed through the load so the colour runs the full depth of the slab. It suits owners who want the driveway to sit with the roof or the render without the texture of exposed stone.

Exposed aggregate, $130 to $185 per m². The surface is washed back to show the stone. It hides tyre marks and leaf stains better than any flat finish and it is what most new estate frontages are specified in. The exposed aggregate page covers stone choice and sealing.

What is under it matters more

The ground here changes within a few kilometres. Near the coast, in Merewether or Belmont, slabs sit on sand that drains freely but needs confining at the edges. Further west the soil turns to clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and a driveway there depends on its base being taken down to firm material and compacted where the ground calls for it. Mesh is set on chairs so it ends up inside the slab rather than under it, and joints are cut to control where the concrete cracks, because all concrete does. The specification sets the build out in full so you can hold quotes against it.

The piece council owns

From your boundary to the kerb the driveway crosses public land, and that crossing needs approval before it is poured, whether it is new, widened or replaced. The two councils run different processes and publish different standards, including a 100 mm minimum slab in Newcastle and 125 mm in Lake Macquarie. It is all in the Section 138 guide. Lodge early: the approval letter is what lets the pour be booked.

Replacing an old driveway

Where a slab has failed, laying new concrete over it only copies the problem. The old driveway is broken out, carted away and the base corrected before the new pour, which adds about $35 per m². See removal and replacement.

Asked and answered

Concrete driveways: common questions

How much does a concrete driveway cost in Newcastle?

Plain broom finished concrete runs $95 to $130 per square metre supplied and laid, coloured concrete $115 to $160 and exposed aggregate $130 to $185. A 40 square metre single driveway in plain concrete therefore sits between about $3,800 and $5,200, and the same driveway in exposed aggregate between $5,200 and $7,400. Removing an old driveway first adds about $35 per square metre.

Do I need council approval for a new driveway?

For the part between the kerb and your boundary, yes. It is approved under Section 138 of the Roads Act, by City of Newcastle as a Section 138 (Type 1) application or by Lake Macquarie City Council as a Minor Public Works application, and a DA or CDC does not cover it. The driveway inside your boundary is a separate matter. Our Section 138 guide explains both councils step by step.

How long before I can drive on new concrete?

Concrete gains strength over about four weeks. Foot traffic is normally fine the next day, and most concreters ask for around a week before cars use a new driveway, longer in cold or wet weather. The concreter who pours your job will give you the figure for your mix and conditions.

Can the council crossing be exposed aggregate too?

Sometimes. Newcastle's standard drawing calls for plain broom finished concrete and says decorative finishes may be considered. Lake Macquarie accepts exposed aggregate where at least 75 percent of the stone is rhyolite or basalt. Many owners run the decorative finish to the boundary and keep the crossing plain.
