Charlestown is the largest suburb in Lake Macquarie, about ten kilometres west-south-west of the Newcastle CBD. The Pacific Highway follows the ridge through its centre, Charlestown Road meets it there, and Charlestown Square on Pearson Street has drawn the region’s shoppers since 1979. It began in 1876 as a coal company township of thirty or forty houses, stayed modest between the wars, and filled out once services caught up: town water in 1927, sewer in 1959 and new primary schools in 1959 and 1963. Today three in four occupied dwellings are separate houses, the rest are townhouses and apartments, and council is zoning for more.

Council describes the landform simply: a ridge running north to south along the line of the highway, with the ground falling away into valleys that hold creek lines. The whole suburb is inside the Lake Macquarie Mine Subsidence District, and the first Waratah Coal Company shaft went down in Raspberry Gully, north of the centre, in 1873.
